Film Screening: Kafka geht ins Kino ("Kafka Goes to the Movies")

At the beginning of the 20th century, cinema was new and exciting, and Franz Kafka was fascinated by it. Despite many of the movies from that time being of a tabloid, sensational nature, Kafka was literally captivated by them, excitedly commenting on them in his diary. In his filmic essay Kafka goes to the Movies, actor and writer Hanns Zischler surveys what has survived of Kafka's cinematic pleasures and discusses how these loud, shrill and often bizarre works leave traces in this writing. We will watch Zischler's movie (55 minutes) and also take a peek at some of the surviving movies.
