Bio: Considered a cinematic feminist pioneer and one of America’s foremost independent filmmakers, Menkes has shown widely in major international film festivals including multiple premieres at Sundance, the Berlinale, Cannes, Rotterdam, Locarno, Toronto, La Cinematheque Francaise, British Film Institute, Whitney Museum of American Art and MOMA in NYC and LACMA in LA.
BRAINWASHED: Sex-Camera-Power premiered in at Sundance 2022 and went on to screen at the Berlinale, CPH:DOX, Karlovy Vary, Frameline, IDFA and numerous additional film festivals worldwide. The film was released theatrically by Kino Lorber in partnership with Kanopy. Named one of the top ten films of 2022 by Film Comment, Roger Ebert, IMDB, Screen Slate, Pinnland Empire and many more. The Association of Women Film Journalists also cited the film as an “Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the film Industry”.
Nina Menkes has an MFA with high honors from the UCLA Film School (1989). She has taught film directing at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and is currently a faculty member at California Institute of the Arts. She is a directing member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
Fridays at Newcomb is a lecture series with speakers across disciplines that provides students with the opportunity to learn about subjects outside of their majors. Lunch provided. It is free and open to the public.
