MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS

By ATHOL FUGARD Moderated by Dr. John Proctor

The Department of Theatre & Dance is again hosting Live From the Lab, a live play-reading series, with this season’s main focus exclusively being on international playwrights and playwrights of color.

On November 4th, our next reading from Live From the Lab reading will be Master Harold and The Boys by Athol Fugard, moderated by Dr. John Proctor. The play focuses on South Africa during Apartheid and depicts how institutionalized racism, bigotry or hatred can become absorbed by those who live under it.

About MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS

"1950. Apartheid South Africa. St George's Park Tea Room, Port Elizabeth, 1950. On a long rainy afternoon, employees Sam and Willie practise their steps for the finals of the ballroom dancing championship.

Hally arrives from school to hide out in his parents’ tea room. These two men have been unlikely best friends to Hally his whole life. But it is apartheid era South Africa: he’s Master Harold, and they are the boys.”
