By Sophie Treadwell

Directed by Ryder Thornton

Machinal tells the story of Helen Jones, a stenographer who takes drastic action to escape the male-dominated and mechanized world that confines her. Inspired by the 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder, Sophie Treadwell’s landmark Expressionist drama is a jarring look at a modern woman’s desperate struggle to defy expectation and not leave her life unlived.
