February 01, 2020 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Uptown CampusThis workshop is intended to help service-learning students think critically about their role during the service learning experience, including their potential impacts on the communities they work with. Tulane students will explore the context of service learning and the relationship between New Orleans and Tulane. This workshop is also intended to help prepare Tulane students to enter New Orleans communities with respect, self-awareness and humility; to first do no harm, to recognize the strengths of the community, and to collaborate in meaningful and reciprocal ways.
What to expect:
● Service learners will have an opportunity to explore and share best practices for entering a community that may be new to them, to ask questions, and to reflect on their role as service learners.
● By the end of this workshop, students will understand how stereotypes and assumptions about communities can influence the service learning experience.
● Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on Tulane’s relationship with New Orleans and will think critically about the role of the university in society.
*Workshops with 8 RSVP's or less will be cancelled/ rescheduled.
