This workshop is designed to prepare Tulane service learning students to think critically about their role as tutors, mentors and coaches in youth-based programs, and to engage young people in healthy, safe, and positive interactions. This workshop is also intended to be an introduction for service learners to reflect on the responsibilities and challenges involved in supporting and connecting with young people across various backgrounds and life experiences.

Rational Objectives

• Participants will work to build empathy and the ability to relate and build positive relationships with young people across different backgrounds and experiences.

• Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences in school, working with mentors and youth-based programs, in order to identify strengths and also recognize potential differences in their experiences.

• Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the impact of microaggressions and other harmful behaviors, and explore strengths-based strategies for supporting young people in achieving their goals.

The "Working with Youth" workshop is designed for all service learning courses partnering with schools or youth development programs. If you have already attended an "Entering Communities" workshop, we encourage you to attend a "2nd Tier" workshop.
