Public Education in New Orleans illustration

When it comes to public education, New Orleans is unlike any other city in the country. Since Hurricane Katrina, nearly all public schools have become public charters run by independent, non-profit charter organizations and students can attend any school in the city, no matter where they live. Learn more about our uniquely decentralized education system, and public perceptions of it, nearly two decades into this massive redesign. Annually, Tulane’s Cowen Institute chronicles the education system and polls over 1,000 New Orleans parents to assess their perceptions of the K-12 public education in the city. In this presentation, the Cowen Institute covers the state of public education in New Orleans and the findings from our latest poll, conducted in the fall of 2024. If you want to learn more about how New Orleanians feel about the quality of schools, career and college readiness, and the upcoming elections, join us for this insightful and engaging conversation.
