David Gaus is an accomplished alumnus of both the SPHTM and School of Medicine (combined MD/MPH program, 1992), and his life and career are profiled in a book called "Long Road from Quito" that was published in 2019. He completed a Family Practice Residency at the Univ. of Wisconsin/St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee in 1995. After working 2 years as full-time teaching faculty at St. Luke’s, he moved to Ecuador in 1997 where he founded and directed Andean Health & Development, a non-governmental organization that builds sustainable rural healthcare infrastructure and supports establishing secondary care facilities in provincial capitals (a key gap in health care in many low- and middle-income countries).
