Sociology Colloquium, featuring Dr. Victor Ray: On Critical Race Theory illustration
Presentation Abstract:
Both critical race theory and sociology have been recently banned in schools across the U.S. South. This timely event will talk about why this moment is so critical for racial justice.

Sociologist and author Victor Ray will speak on his latest book On Critical Race Theory: Why it Matters & Why We Should Care.

Ray will also discuss Derek Bell’s ideas on interest convergence, highlighting how “progress for Black Americans has come about when there is equal or greater benefit to white Americans.” He will point to the history of color-blind laws that the civil rights movement took on, but how injustices such as voter disenfranchisement persist today. Ray believes we are in a period of interest divergence, “in which at least some white elites see Black and Brown progress as zero sum.”
