Using Podcasts & Video Essays as Research Assignments (In-Person)
Podcasts and video essays may be non-traditional assignment types, but they have a lot to offer. For faculty, it’s a break from reading so many papers and trying to decipher which portions of a paper offer original thought and which were written by AI. For students, podcast and video essay assignments offer an opportunity to learn new skills that will be valuable assets on their CV. For everyone, podcasts and video essays offer an opportunity to think critically about why we conduct research, who that research is for, and how we can effectively communicate that research to non-academic communities impacted by our work.
In this workshop, we’ll get to the heart of what podcast and video essays are, assignment design elements to support a successful student experience and project, and resources available to support you and your students in your creative media assignments.
