Limited-edition Blu-ray screening of one of the most important Chinese films of the contemporary era. Directed and shot by then fresh graduates of the Beijing Film Academy, the film explores the legacies of the Communist revolution with unconventional cinematic language. During the second Sino-Japanese war, a communist solider is sent to a remote region to collect folk songs. He tells stories of liberated life in the communist base camp to a young village girl who is betrothed in an arranged marriage. The landscape and its titular yellow earth, however, are what carry the story. Open to the public. Followed by a brief Q & A with Prof. Hongwei Thorn Chen.
