When Does Neighborhood Poverty Matter?

The Sociology Department invites the university community to our inaugural Favrot lecture. The lecture will take place at the Lavin-Bernick Center, Room 202, on Friday, January 31st, from 1-2:30PM. 

This year's public talk features Mario Small, Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. Professor Small will examine how inequality and poverty affects communities and the people within them---a question that requires examining where, when, for whom, and under what conditions neighborhoods matter. He shows that these questions are more tractable than even as little as 15 years ago, given the rapidly rising availability of large-scale administrative ("big") data from public and private sources.  He will present several results suggesting that, in the context of neighborhoods, race may matter more than class.
