Hear the Voices of New Orleans Youth
ERA-New Orleans invites you to join us for a discussion of the findings from our first citywide survey of New Orleans students at Dillard University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. We will release the full survey report on that date.
Every day, we use statistics about things like graduation rates or poverty rates to describe what the education landscape is like in New Orleans. We use test scores to decide which schools are rated “A” and which are classified as failing. Yet rarely do we ever get to hear from students about what they think of their schools, their teachers, and their neighborhoods.
That is why the Education Research Alliance for New Orleans is excited to announce the results of this survey of almost 4,000 students in publicly funded schools across the city. Our report, Voices of New Orleans Youth, offers a rich opportunity to learn more about how students view their schools – and how communities or public programs can better serve them.
Students, school leaders, and community stakeholders will gather on a panel to talk about the survey’s key takeaways and take questions from the audience. Topics discussed will include how students of various races rate their teachers and schools differently; how students view their neighborhoods and their relationship with the police; and students’ beliefs about themselves and their own aspirations for college.
The event is free to all, and refreshments will be served.
