Seeds of Power: Virtual Book Launch with Amalia Leguizamón, In Conversation with Toby Miller

Join us for a discussion with Amalia Leguizamón and Toby Miller about resource extraction and environmental politics in Latin America. Leguizamón will be presenting her new book, Seeds of Power: Environmental Injustice and Genetically Modified Soybeans in Argentina published by Duke University Press.

Seeds of Power tells the story of Argentina's swift agrarian transformation based on the early adoption and intensive implementation of genetically modified soybeans. Leguizamón explores why Argentines largely support GM crops despite the widespread social and ecological harm they create. She reveals how state and corporate actors deploy narratives of economic growth, scientific expertise, and national identity as a way to elicit compliance among the country's most vulnerable rural residents. In this way, Leguizamón shows how GM soy operates as a tool of power to obtain consent, to quell potential dissent, and to legitimize injustice.

Amalia Leguizamón is Associate Professor of Sociology and Latin American Studies at Tulane University. Her work on GM soybeans in Argentina has been published in The Journal of Peasant Studies, Latin American Perspectives, and Geoforum, among others. 

Toby Miller is Stuart Hall Professor of Cultural Studies at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Cuajimalpa. He is the author and editor of over thirty books, including Greening the Media (Oxford, 2012) and, most recently, How Green is Your Smartphone? (Polity, 2020), both co-authored with Richard Maxwell.
