Wild Visionary: A Book Launch and Conversation on Maurice Sendak

A conversation on the life and work of Maurice Sendak, with a special focus on Dr. Golan Moskowitz's (Tulane) recently published book Wild Visionary: Maurice Sendak in Queer Jewish Context (20% off with Stanford University Press using the code VISIONARY20).

Featuring:

• Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked, on which the award-winning Broadway musical is based, along with several dozen crossover books for adults and children. Maguire received his PhD in English and American Literature from Tufts University, and he helped found and direct Children’s Literature New England, Inc., a nonprofit that raises awareness of the significance of literature in the lives of children.

• Brian Selznick, author and illustrator of many books for children, including The Invention of Hugo Cabret, winner of the Caldecott medal and the basis for the Oscar-winning movie Hugo. Selznick created the 20th-anniversary book covers for J. K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter series, and his newest book (and first for an adult audience), Live Oak, With Moss, was inspired by a conversation with Maurice Sendak and is based on twelve poems on Queer love by Walt Whitman. He is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and lives in Brooklyn, NY and San Diego, CA with his husband, David Serlin.

• Golan Moskowitz, Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Tulane University. Moskowitz is a literary scholar, cultural historian, and visual artist. His book on Maurice Sendak, Wild Visionary: Maurice Sendak in Queer Jewish Context, was published by Stanford University Press in December 2020.

Moderated by Marah Gubar, Associate Professor of Literature at MIT. Gubar is the author of Artful Dodgers: Reconceiving the Golden Age of Children's Literature (Oxford University Press, 2009) and is currently at work on a book titled How to Think About Children: Childhood Studies in the Academy and Beyond.
