OPENING RECEPTION: LEGACY OF CENTRAL CITY _ An Art Installation and Cultural Event Series

Event Date

Uptown Campus
The Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design

We ask, how can Central City history and culture – extending back to the cypress swamps of Bulbancha and to the many nations of Africa – inspire today’s youth? Throughout spring 2022, join Civic Studio in exploring this question through an interactive art installation and cultural event series.

Through artwork, artifacts, and photography, and with the guidance of elders and creators, we will explore how the Central City we know today came to be. How did backswamp become a working class neighborhood? How did Civil Rights era activism emerge from the neighborhood’s parks, streets, and churches? How do some of hip hop’s biggest hits help us understand the significance of public housing in and what New Orleans was like before Hurricane Katrina?

The Legacy of Central City  installation and public program is open to all, with a particular emphasis on young people. The events are free for anyone 21 and under, and donation-based for everyone else to help cover exhibition costs and honorariums.
