Film Screening: Some Like It Hot
Please join us on Friday October 14th at 5:00 PM in Stone Auditorium for a screening of the classic beloved comedy Some Like It Hot.
Considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, Some Like It Hot is a 1959 American romantic comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, Curtis and Lemmon play two down-on-their-luck musicians who accidentally witness a mob hit, and flee town by disguising themselves as women in order to join an all-female traveling band headed to Miami. They both become enamored of the band's vocalist Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), and try to compete for her affection while maintaining their cover disguises.
The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, winning for Best Costume Design. In 1989, the Library of Congress selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film was produced without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code (Hays Code), because it features LGBT-related themes, including cross-dressing. The overwhelming success of Some Like It Hot is considered one of the reasons behind the replacement of the Hays Code.
We hope you will join us for this classic film, and also for the follow-up lecture on the film the following Tuesday, October 18th, which will feature a catered reception!
