In advance of Transgender Day of Visibility, nolaHYPE, Tulane's Violence Prevention Institute, and The Broad Theater present a film screening and panel featuring two short documentaries - House of TULIP and CANS Can't Stand.

This event is open to the public and "pay-what-you-can" as a donation to New Orleans-based organizations supporting transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

Join us on March 30 from 7 to 9 pm at The Broad Theater to watch both documentaries and hear from those involved with the film's subject matter.

House of Tulip follows two Black trans activists as they run for office and work to build Louisiana’s first housing refuge that provides residency solely for trans and gender non-conforming residents. We’ll follow the founders as they fight to use their organization to protect and build community in a state with one of the highest murder rates in the country. Their journeys will highlight the dangerous, yet beautiful reality of what it means to be Black trans women in the deep South. The film is directed by Cydney Tucker and produced by Zaferhan Yumru.

For forty years, police and prosecutors have weaponized Louisiana's Crime Against Nature by Solicitation (CANS) law to terrorize queer/trans Louisianians. CANS Can't Stand follows a group of Black trans women in New Orleans who are fighting to repeal that law—and advance trans liberation across the state. CANS Can’t Stand was produced by Lynwood Films in association with Operation Restoration and NOVAC. It co-directed by Matt Nadel and Megan Plotka with co-producer Wendi Cooper.
