We invite you to a special event as part of our ongoing art series at Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. On October 1st, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, we will host "Above the Abyss: Photography and the Art of Catastrophe," a captivating presentation by Professor William Brumfield in Room #430.

Professor Brumfield, a distinguished scholar of Slavic Studies, is renowned for his extensive work in documenting the architecture and cultural heritage of Russia. His photography has not only preserved historical structures but also highlighted the impact of time and tragedy on the human landscape. His unique perspective merges art and history, offering profound insights into how we perceive and commemorate catastrophe.

This event draws inspiration from Vladimir Nabokov's evocative quote in Speak, Memory: "The cradle rocks above the abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness." Professor Brumfield will explore this theme through his powerful photographic work, inviting us to consider the delicate balance between light and darkness in our own lives and history.

We hope you will join us for this enlightening discussion and visual journey. Refreshments will be served, and there will be an opportunity for Q&A following the presentation.

Please mark your calendars for this significant event, and we look forward to seeing you there.
