Join us for the opening of a new exhibition, light refreshments will be provided!

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, this student-produced exhibition presents an all-encompassing timeline of the Vietnamese community in New Orleans. On April 30, 1975, a wave of Vietnamese refugees fled after the fall of Saigon. Less than a month later, 19 Vietnamese immigrants relocated to New Orleans, establishing one of the first Vietnamese populations in the United States. Today, that community has grown to over 14,000 strong and has had a profound impact on New Orleans cuisine, industry, and culture.

Việt Nam in New Orleans is a collaboration between 40 Tulane students who interviewed members of the Vietnamese diaspora in New Orleans as part of Professor Daniella Zalcman’s Community Engagement Journalism class and New Orleans East nonprofit Sông Community Development Corporation. Please join us on Wednesday, April 23 from 4-6pm for an opening reception, and from 6-7pm for a discussion between Professor Zalcman, Sông CDC Co-Executive Director Tập Bùi, former New Orleans Councilwoman and founder of VIET Cyndi Nguyễn, exhibition designer Sam Nga Blum, and Tulane student Mika Nijhawan ’25.

The panel discussion will be in HTML room 430.
