Where to Start in Computational Biology, with Dr. Phillip Compeau (Carnegie Mellon University)
Interested in computational biology but not sure where to begin? Join us for a virtual intro to the field with Dr. Phillip Compeau of Carnegie Mellon University's Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science.
Dr. Compeau is a Teaching Professor in CMU's Computational Biology Department, where he directs the undergraduate program in computational biology. In addition to his research, he co-founded Rosalind (a free platform for learning bioinformatics through problem solving), helped launch the first open online course in computational biology, and co-wrote the textbook Bioinformatics Algorithms: An Active Learning Approach. His online projects have reached over a million learners.
In this workshop, you'll learn what the field actually looks like, how people break into it, and what kind of free resources are out there to teach yourself from scratch. You’ll also hear advice on landing internships, building a career, and how AI is changing things, with a moderated Q&A drawn from student questions and time for open questions at the end. Absolutely no prior experience is needed!
