James N. Green, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Professor of Latin American History at Brown University, is an international renowned historian of modern Brazil as well as an activist and public intellectual. His books include Beyond Carnival: Male Homosexuality in Twentieth-century Brazil (Chicago UP, 1999), We Cannot Remain Silent: Opposition to the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in the United States (Duke UP, 2010) and Exile within Exiles: Herbert Daniel, Gay Brazilian Revolutionary (Duke UP, 2018). He is a past president and current Executive Director of the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA). He is also the Director of Brown's Brazil Initiative, the Director of the Opening the Archives Project, and the National Coordinator of the US Network for Democracy in Brazil.
