LECTURE SERIES: TIM LOVE

"Tinkering with Types: Avenues for Innovation in a Globalized Market," a lecture by Tim Love, FAIA (Utile Design / Northeastern University).


Event Info: In this lecture, Tim Love will outline how global capital markets and codes shape the configuration of buildings and master plans and ways that architects and urban designers can innovate within this system. He will focus on four strategies: 1. Tinker with types. 2. Include a mix of parcel sizes. 3. Hybridize uses. 4. Cross-subsidize for diversity and equity. Love will also make the case that architects need to both innovate within existing contraints and get more involved with the framing and writing of the codes and policies that tell the market what it can and can't do.

About the Lecturer: Tim Love is the founding principal of Utile, a 65-person architecture and planning firm located in Downtown Boston. Recent projects include Envision Cambridge, a citywide plan for Cambridge, Massachusetts; an open space and redevelopment plan for the east sector of Buffalo Bayou in Houston; and a master plan for Eastern Market in Detroit, a food production and processing district with a large public market.  Love is also a tenured associate professor at the Northeastern University School of Architecture where he teaches urban design theory, housing studios, and graduate-level research studios. In addition, he has written about the impact of codes and conventions on practice and pedagogy for journals including Places and the Harvard Design Magazine.
