The Veil: Screening and Discussion

"In January of 2019, Tulane first year student Raven Ancar produced her first film, “The Veil.” The documentary is based on the concept of “the veil” coined in the 1903 landmark novel “The Souls of Black Folks” by W. E. B. Du Bois. In Ancar’s film, “the veil” represents a veil of white supremacy culture on Black students. Through systems of oppression at Tulane, Black students are forced to wear this veil. The veil (of oppression) clouds Black students’ concept of whether they are valued at Tulane, and affects how they view themselves and others. The film unfolds the race-related trials and tribulations of Tulane Black students. From student athletes to POSSE Scholars, Ancar filmed several sit-down interviews with Black students to capture the racist systems that Tulane upholds, while simultaneously filming resilience in the Black student population. The film also critiques Tulane’s Admissions Office, Newcomb Tulane College, and other departments for their false claim of “diversity” in student, faculty, and academic staff populations. The film ultimately provides the narratives of Tulane Black student experiences, exposes their continued oppression at Tulane, and echoes their voices (as Black voices are often silenced the most).
