The International University: Thoughts from an American Educator in China

A lively discussion of academic exchange between China and the United States. Dr. Haas will discuss the long range of foreign study between the two nations, from missionaries and Mandarins to modern joint-venture universities such as NYU Shanghai.  

Thomas J. Sugrue is Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History at NYU. A specialist in twentieth-century American politics, urban history, civil rights, and race, Sugrue was educated at Columbia; King's College, Cambridge; and Harvard, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1992. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an elected member of the Society of American Historians, and past president of both the Urban History Association and the Social Science History Association.

 Author and associate professor of history at Dartmouth College Rashauna Johnson will present a public lecture and sign copies of her book, Slavery's Metropolis: Unfree Labor in New Orleans during the Age of Revolutions on Thursday, October 4 at 6pm. This event will be held in the Woldenberg Art Center Freeman Auditorium.
