WORKSHOP: Selecting a Journal for Publication

You have your research idea, have already started thinking about data collection, and now it’s time to think about where to publish your findings. Choosing the correct journal, can mean higher visibility and impact of your work but which Journal to select isn’t always an obvious choice. In this workshop we will review some of criteria to consider when selecting a Journal. We will also use tools/databases such as IncItes, Ulrich’s, and Directory of Open Access Journals to help gather information about the Journal’s main theme, frequency of publication, availability, and impact factor.

WORKSHOP: Introduction to Data Management

This workshop we will provide guidance and best practices for managing, safeguarding and sharing your working and archived data. We will discuss resources available to you to support these efforts as well as best practices to improve the efficiency of the research process. Topics will include (not limited to): the research data lifecycle, file naming, version control and suggestions for data sharing and storage.

WORKSHOP: Measuring your Impact: Impact Factors and Altmetrics

This workshop will help you measure and assess your impact in the scholarly community and beyond. Using tools such as Web of Science, InCites, Google Scholar, Publish or Perish, and Altmetric Bookmarklet we will explore the different ways to conduct a citation analysis, locate your h-index, and alternative metrics (twitter, blogs, social networking). Although this workshop is geared towards published scholars (formal publications or blogs), it is also useful for students looking to find collaborators, supervisors, or career opportunities.
