Please join the Germanic & Slavic Studies Department for the third film in our Fall Film Series, 2023's Roter Himmel ("Afire").
In this newest feature film by acclaimed director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Phoenix, Transit), wildfires caused by climate change are the constant backdrop for a funny, understated and melancholy relationship drama: a neurotic writer trying to finish his manuscript on the shore of the Baltic Sea is drawn into romantic entanglements and environmental devastation.
The Borders of Paradise offers a poignant exploration of the southern French-Italian border, a place where Europe’s famed luxury meets one of its worst humanitarian hotspots. Once celebrated for its glamour, this region now stands as a bottleneck in the ongoing migrant reception crisis. Every year, over 30,000 migrants pass through Ventimiglia, the last Italian town before the French border, in hopes of a better life.
We will be taking a group of student volunteers to Recirculating Farms to support their needs and learn more about their program.
